Treating Bruises

If your bruise does not require an evaluation by a health professional, you may be able to use home treatment to help relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness. Remember the RICE principle: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Of course don’t forget natural source bruise fighting ingredients: Arnica, Witch Hazel and Menthol.

ArnicaArnica*
The leaves of the arnica plant, which is native to the mountainous regions of Europe to southern Russia, have many traditional medicinal uses. Arnica contains sesquiterpene lactones, which may assist in healing of bruises by: decreasing swelling, speeding blood reabsorption and decreasing pain. Arnica is recommended for external use only. Stop using arnica if a skin rash develops.

Witch Hazel*
The leaves of the witch hazel plant, which grows throughout most of North America, have more than 30 traditional medicinal uses. Witch Hazel has tannins that give it its astringent properties. It eases bruising by tightening stretched veins and restoring blood vessel tone. Witch hazel is recommended for external use.

Menthol*
Menthol is often derived from peppermint oil and has local anaesthetic and counterirritant qualities. It can provide soothing cooling relief to bruised areas.

*Only Zax’s Original Bruise Cream contains Arnica, Witch Hazel and Menthol.

Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. Do not massage the bruised area if it causes pain. Do not smoke or use other tobacco products. Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair. Check with your doctor if : A bruise lasts longer than 4 weeks, signs of infection develop, symptoms become more severe or frequent, or of new symptoms develop.

Bruise Facts

A bruise is a common skin injury that results in a discoloration of the skin. When small blood vessels under the surface of the skin tear or rupture, bruises (also known as contusions) develop. They occur most often from a bump or fall. The black-and-blue color is caused by blood from damaged blood vessels deep beneath the skin collects near the surface of the skin. Bruises usually heal within 2 to 4 weeks. As they heal they often turn colors, including purplish black, reddish blue, or yellowish green.

Other Interesting Bruise Facts:

• A leg bruise usually takes longer to heal than a bruise on the face or arms.
• Women bruise more easily than men (especially on the buttocks, thighs, and upper arms.
• Older adults often bruise more easily from minor injuries because their skin is less flexible and thinner leading to blood vessels breaking more easily.
• Bruising easily sometimes runs in families.
